JUMANNE ROBERTSON’S STORY

I connected with Jumanne on Twitter. He’d been following my tweets for #HustleBelieveReceive and I could see he was also living his dream, so I asked if he’d be willing to share his story.

“I started playing football when I was in eighth grade and I loved it right away, even though I was older than most of the other kids. In high school I played really well but didn’t have the grades to make the big college recruit lists, so I wound up going to a junior college in Arizona. There came a point where I was finally being recruited by four-year universities and had several offers to play Division One ball, but I hadn’t focused on my academics and was thirty-five credits short of being eligible to transfer. Everyone told me it was impossible to make up that many credits in one semester, but I wouldn’t hear it. I found a way to hustle and get it done. Even though my school’s semester limit was twenty credits, I enrolled in another junior college and took the additional fifteen at the same time (#TheHustle).

“When I saw the opportunity, I told myself if it was humanly possible I was going to take advantage of it. At the time, I was living on my own in a little studio apartment, taking the bus to school every day, waking up at 5:00 A.M., and being in class from 8:00 A.M. to 10:00 P.M. five days a week for four months (#RelentlessPursuit).

“It paid off though; I was able to accept a scholarship from Utah State University and start my first year as a junior. It was beyond amazing (#ManifestThat!)! That year we actually went to a bowl game, and my senior year we also went to a bowl (#HBRLife). Not only that, but I was able to graduate with a degree in sociology from a four-year university.”

After graduation, Jumanne wasn’t drafted, but he did get invited to the Carolina Panthers’ training camp. “I dreamed of getting invited to an NFL training camp and when it came true it was just out of this world—the realization of a lifetime dream (#ManifestThat!)! It was such a blessing, even though I was released; my family and I were still happy (#GetGrateful).”

Six months passed after graduation and there were no calls from prospective teams. “I had a fiancé and a young son and it got scary because I didn’t have a job or income.” Jumanne said. So he moved his family to Michigan in hopes of getting a job, but couldn’t find any work that wasn’t either in a factory or a coffee shop.

“Then one day I randomly got a call from a coach from Portland, Oregon, who asked me if I was still interested in playing football (#ManifestThat!). I took a risk and moved to play for the Portland Thunder in 2014. I only played for half a season before I got injured and then released (#EarthquakeMoment).”

Again Jumanne was faced with the decision to get a “real job” or continue pursuing his dream to play football.
